To become a volunteer at one of our School or Community Good New Clubs, please contact CEF of East Central Florida at 386-767-6792. Read on for an explanation of the process.
Step 1
All volunteers fill out a screening packet, without exception. The packet includes contact information, personal testimony, our Statement of Faith, and a background screening form. The packet can be obtained from the office upon request, and delivered by email, fax, mail, or you can stop by the office to receive one in person.
Once the packet is complete, a background check is run on the applicant. This process usually takes 3-5 business days, and is handled by the State Office.
Step 2
Each applicant must listen to or view CEF’s ‘Protecting Today’s Child’ presentation. This twelve minute visual or audio presentation explains CEF’s methods of ensuring the safety of the children that take part in Good News Clubs, and the volunteer’s duties in ensuring the safety of the children. The presentation can either be viewed at the office, or a toll free number can be called.
Step 3
A short interview is then held, usually over the phone, to ensure the volunteer understood and agrees with the policies of CEF, and to allow a chance for questions and/or clarification.
Step 4
For those planning to volunteer in Volusia County Schools, this step is required. At this time, those volunteering in Flagler County, or in Community Good News Clubs (Such as YMCA’s), do not require this step. The Volusia County School Board requires that all individuals working on school grounds in any capacity be cleared by their screening agency.
This requires each volunteer to fill out an online form, pay a fee of $87.50 (Credit Card, Debit Card, or PayPal required), and have their fingerprints taken. Volunteers are welcome to come by the office for assistance with this process, especially if they aren’t comfortable with computers. While filling out the form, the applicant will also schedule an appointment for fingerprinting. The address of the nearest fingerprinting location will be provided (if filling the forms out at the office, there is a location within two blocks).
Once the fingerprinting is completed, the Office will usually have the results within five business days.
Step 5
All volunteers are issued a photo ID badge after they are cleared to go into the schools. For this, we require a digital photo. Scheduling an office visit will allow us to take one, or if you own a digital camera, you can snap one yourself and email it to us. Once the screening process is complete, you will be contacted to arrange the best way to receive your ID.
Step 6
The final step is our Basic Teacher Training courses. This free course is taught frequently throughout the year, and covers basic classroom management, child management, and child witnessing. The course is usually held over two nights, for two hours each night, and will greatly assist your work in Good News Clubs.
Those wishing for more instruction in working with children, or wishing to be Team Leaders should take Teaching Children Effectively (Level 1) which provides in-depth instruction on classroom learning, methods to evangelize children, and organizing and enriching a classroom. TCE courses are held throughout the year, and are a 30 hour course held over four Saturdays. For more information, contact us at 386-767-6792.
